Dram Review: Nikka Single Cask Malt Whisky Yoichi Nicol’s Dram

[57.8%・14 Years Old・Distilled in 1986・Bottled in 2000・Official Bottling・Cask No. 126941・Single Cask Release]

Nose:

A heavy belter with a heavy-handed serving of intensely creamy vanilla splashed generously with cinnamon spices.  The oak begins to char in the background as the coal smoke draws some cured meat notes to go with the ripe fruits from the spirit.

Palate & Finish:

A indulging festive mic of poached fruits and Christmas pudding, the coal smoke gives a warming presence as a feisty showing of spices serve to lay the path for an introduction of sweet vanilla and fig jam.

The sweet gooey presence peels off in the finish to reveal a lasting tail of peat smoke and ash.

Thoughts:

I have always thought highly of Yoichi single casks, perhaps not the most exquisite whiskies out there, but they often do come in immense characters.

Thoroughly enjoyable.
