Dram Review: Mt Uncle The Big Black Cock

[43.0%・5 Years Old・Bottled Circa 2016・Official Bottling・Single Cask Release]

Nose:

The nose is brandy-esque.  Lemony with a touch of lemon grass and hint of Sauternes.  The spirit influence is subservient and a bit grassy.

Palate & Finish:

Apricots and sultana leading the delivery.  The spirit is too thin to give a notable presence, providing a splash of grassy honey water before finishing rather early.

Thoughts:

I half-expected the experience to be quite traumatic but in reality this felt somewhat flaccid..

Mt Uncle advises that this was matured in a hybrid American/French oak barrel.  My understanding is that the barrel held cognac/brandy previously.  I am partial to the concept in particular to how the cask shaped the nose but I would like to see the spirit having more oomph to it so the dram shows some depth.

With a name like that, this probably should have been bottled straight from the cask anyway..
