First Impression: Pappy Van Winkle 20 Years Old

A.K.A. “Southern Hospitality”

I was lucky enough to taste the Pappy Van Winkle 20 YO (I believe they were both the 2014 release) on two occasions and here are my takeaways from them.

1st visit:-

A complex nose, cinnamon spices, leather, smoked sandalwood, a pinch of salt and then some vanilla, cocoa and raisins after a while.

Big woody palate, leather, then some candied apple, orange peels, a bit savoury actually.

A satisfyingly smooth wood oil finish.

2nd visit:-

An intensely rich nose of walnuts and brown sugar with an orange zing. Quite a big dose of wood but in an enticing way, leather, thick toffee and hints of dark chocolate. The char is sweet and mesmerising.

Sweet on the palate with a citrus orange zing. Some youthful floral and light honey notes before the woodiness strikes.

Char and cinnamon, milk chocolate and warming spices in the finish.

It’s a hearty dram.
